2003 Calendar – March

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022-2023, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Why this schedule? Because it is a calendar. For 2003.

I made three of these – one for my son, one for my parents, and one for my husband. It’s the last one that I am showing to you. They were all alike except for the covers.

I hoped this calendar could be a small record of a certain time in our family. I do not know if my son still has his version, and my parents now are dead and their things scattered and gone, but here is the one we still have at our house, a voice speaking up again from the past.

If you want to know more about this calendar, look here.

Here is the collage image I used for the month of March, 2003. It’s called “March Rainstorm” and was 11″ x 14″. It depicts the backs of a row of houses down the hill from our own house at the time, on a typical Pennsylvania March day, gray and damp.

Here is the page in the calendar. (As a note, the colors in the image above are more true to what the collage actually looked like).

Happy March!

As for the notes, you can see that spring is coming along in the world and in my thoughts!

*********

Now I have posted all 12 months of 2003. It has been bittersweet reviewing this calendar and in reflecting on the many changes that have occured since that time.

I am grateful for my past and hopeful for my future. That is what a calendar reminds me.

2003 Calendar – February

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022-2023, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Here is the collage image I used for the month of February, 2003. It’s called “February Haven” and was 11″ x 14″. It depicts The Quadrant, a coffee shop/bookstore in Easton, PA, where I spent a lot of time during this time in my past, including having a couple of art exhibits in their upstairs gallery space.

Here is the page in the calendar.

Happy February!

As for the notes, #1, I love Valentine’s Day and making and sending cards. #4. We had large gardens at this house and enjoyed planning and planting. #10. I love playing double (or triple or quadruple) solitaire.

2003 Calendar – January

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022-2023, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

If you want to know more about this calendar, look here.

Here is the collage image I used for the month of January, 2003. It’s called “January Diversion” and was 11″ x 14″. I made this image from a photo I took when my son went skating with a school group at the Old York Road rink in Elkins Park, PA (He is the guy in green pants near the front).

I don’t think this rink is still in business, but I’m not sure. As a note, about a year later I decided I wanted to learn to ice skate, went hereto the first lesson, fell, and broke my elbow. The end of my skating career.

Here is the page in the calendar.

Happy January!

As to the notes, #1. Raquel and Jaspar were a couple of our cats, a brother and sister duo who lived another 15 years or so and died within 6 weeks of one another. As for all the others, you can see that this month, the depth of winter, required a lot of pampering activities to fight back the cold and darkness!

2003 Calendar – December

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022-2023, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Why this schedule? Because it is a calendar. For 2003.

Again! The December image is missing from my archives. It was called “December Journey” and it showed commuters getting on to the commuter train in Glenside, PA. I worked in the city for many years, as did my husband, and this scene was part of our lives for decades.

Here is the page in the calendar.

Happy December!

The notes all speak for themselves, I think.

Here’s another collage with a December theme, to make up for the missing one. It’s called “Driving in December” and it was 11″ x 14″. It depicts the bridge over the railroad tracks in Wyncote, PA, at the Jenkintown-Wyncote station, from the Wyncote side.

2003 Calendar – November

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022-2023, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Once again I am missing the image of the picture I used for this month in the calendar. It was called “November City” and depicted a view familiar to me from my years of working just south of City Hall in Philadelphia. This image is looking west on Market Street from City Hall.

Here is the page in the calendar.

Happy November!

As to the notes, #1 – the most important day in the year! My birthday! #8 – At this time I was taking Spanish classes at Arcadia University, just for my own enjoyment. I’m no longer able to speak or read much, but back then I learned enough to follow telenovelas. I taped each episode and then my family and I watched it, with me pausing the tape to translate if needed, but, telenovelas are generally very dramatic and the action spoke for itself. #9 Ahhh, that fluffy lavender robe!

As an extra, here are some other November-themed collages I made over the years:

2003 Calendar – October

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022-2023, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Why this schedule? Because it is a calendar. For 2003.

If you want to know more about this calendar, look here.

I can’t find the collage image I used for this month in my archives. I see from the calendar it’s called “October Afternoon” and I think it was 11″ x 14″. I do remember the scene very well. It was the parking lot back side view of some buildings in Jenkintown, PA, near my house. Not long after this picture was made the block was taken down and the area rebuilt with a more modern array of stores plus a small park.

So, no picture this month. Just the calendar!

Happy October!

As to the notes, they are all pretty self-explanatory, except for #4. At the time, I did a lot of knitting and I made all my own sweaters plus plenty of items for family and friends. And maybe #7 needs a note. At this time part of our yard was seeded with wildflowers.

To compensate for the missing October image, here is another one with an October theme. It’s called “October Scene”.

2003 Calendar – September

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022-2023, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Why this schedule? Because it is a calendar. For 2003.

Here is the collage image I used for the month of September, 2003. It’s called “September Vegetables” and was 11″ x 14″. I did the picture from vegetables we had on hand; I posed them in our kitchen. I think, but am not sure, that we grew the tomatoes.

Here is the page in the calendar.

Happy September!

As to the notes, for #1 and #3, my son was still in school at the time, so school things were on my mind. For #4, the fall was my busiest season for art shows and we were usually participating in one every weekend through October. Weather was always a worry and it paid to have a lot of clothes to choose from if things changed during the day. For #5, buckeyes, also known as horse chestnuts, were a childhood tradition for me. They were considered good luck and my grandfather always collected some and gave them to me so I could carry it with me and rub it for luck if I needed it. For #7, I hate shopping and crowds so I always did my Christmas shopping very early. For #8, we grew this flower in our yard and at this time of year each blossom was covered with bees.

2003 Calendar – August

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Here is the collage image I used for the month of August, 2003. It’s called “August Summer Song” and was 7″ x 5″ as seen here. However, originally the piece was larger (11″ x 14″). I had not made many abstract collages back then and I never got satisfied with this one. And, it never got much attention in my booth, never mind close to selling. Remember, for me back then, selling my art was the ultimate purpose for its making.

So, for the calendar it appeared in its original form but some time later, I cut it down to this size and sold it right away. Now I’m not sure I would have altered it, but…what is done is what is done.

Here is the page in the calendar.

Happy August!

As to the notes, 1. Fred Sherman was one of our cats, who had died a couple of years earlier. 3. I had just begun to try other mediums, as you can see here where I mention acrylic paints and oil pastels. 4. School supplies – at this time my son was in high school and back then, the students still used pencils… 6. I am not religious but I like the idea there was a St. Claudia (though she didn’t seem to have much of a story). 10. I guess if I am eating tomato sandwiches my tomato plants must have grown well and prospered.

2003 Calendar – July

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Here is the collage image I used for the month of July, 2003. It’s called “July Retreat” and was 14″ x 11″. It depicts the front porch of our neighbor at the house where we lived in 2001-2002, when I was collecting items for this calendar. The porch was a large wrap-around structure and it was furnished with all kinds of comfortable chairs and sofas and tables. Our neighbors often sat outside or ate dinner there.

Here is the page in the calendar.

Happy July!

Item one, Bob is my husband and July is his birthday month. Item two, Arthur was my cat before I got married, a fellow with a difficult personality, and my husband learned to tolerate him and later to like him (a little). I mention garden items again – the purple hydrangeas were a beautiful deep purple color I still remember. Item 10 – our house was a large place with window air conditioners, and it wasn’t possible to cool it all. Being thrifty we tried to run the a/c as little as possible.

2003 Calendar – June

Here’s a project I did in 2001-2002 that I had forgotten about. Now, here in 2022, I will take a trip down memory lane and show it to you, once each month.

Here is the collage image I used for the month of June, 2003. It’s called “June Vacation” and was 14″ x 11″. It depicts the beach and boardwalk at Bethany Beach, Delaware. I did an art show here on the boardwalk a couple of times – it was a nice experience.

Here is the page in the calendar. Once again, many references are made to our gardens.

Item #4 refers to my art show schedule – at this time, I was doing 20 or so shows a year with most of them occurring between the months of May through October. This particular reference relates to a show we did during a tropical storm and that taught us to always always always! take along a change or two of clothing, even to a one-day event.

Because things were hectic in the summer, Item #9 was a necessary reminder to myself.

Item #7 refers to a favorite thing I still like to do – whenever I go anywhere, I buy postcards and send them. I love sending them and I love getting them.

Then there is Item #10. It seems I am always looking for a bathing suit with a good fit. Isn’t everyone?

Happy June!
