Local Sights

These two paintings, done in November 2017, are based on locations near me and that I see so often I wonder at the fact that I still find them interesting. But I do. It’s because something small changes every day.

I’ve captured just one day in the life of these places.

As usual, I have made some changes from photo to painting, but – I think you can see the bones of the inspirations.

I’ll start with the intersection of Spring Garden Street and Butler Avenue, Ambler, PA. If you follow my poetry blog you know that I have made a little occasion of photographing this intersection as I wait at the light there on my way to Montco for Poetry Marathon sessions.  Here’s one of those photos:

and here is the painting (acrylics, 12″ x 18″)

“Leaving Downtown”

And the second location is closer to my home – a repair shop I pass almost every day, at Jenkintown and Baeder Roads, Glenside. Photo:

Real and My Real: House in Allentown, PA

Here is a photo I took of homes near West Park, Allentown, PA, in June 2017.

Here’s a painting of the same scene. Suitably altered to fit my mood on the day I did it, some months later. I like the repetition of forms. And the beautiful architectural details, but that’s for another painting. This one focuses on the large shapes I saw.

Acrylics on wood board, 8″ x 10″, October, 2017.

Pedestrians Two: Real and My Real

A photo I took on Market Street in Philadelphia, PA, in August, 2017. Notice that the lady is the same one as in a previous post.

Now here she is in my painted version. A bit of an appearance change. Can a person do this kind of magic just walking down the street? No, but I can, with my paintbrush and acrylic paints. And India ink. And NeoColor I crayons. On an 8″ x 8″ wood board.

Pedestrians One: Real and My Real

Here is a photo I took in August, 2017, in Philadelphia, PA.

Here is my painted version. A little different but a little the same. That is what painting is all about for me.

Acrylics, NeoColor I crayons, India ink. 8″ x 8″, September, 2017.

Tiles From December, 2016 – Group 12

Two Lehigh Valley scenes.

You may remember I did a tile featuring a chef from the Hotel Bethlehem last year, too – I took both photos from the mezzanine above the lobby where the buffet was laid out. I am wondering if this will become a tradition for me?

Tiles from December 2016 – Group 10

Here is another category – these tiles in this section are done on commercially made 6″ x 6″ white clay tiles that I buy already bisque-fired. They are very regular and smooth.

These first two tiles are made from photos I took in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia. They may look familiar – I also did pen and ink drawings of these photos and posted them a little while ago.

Tiles From December, 2016 – Group 9

These are both from photos I took in Allentown, PA.
