…is the name of today’s story at Fictive Dream.
Throughout the month of February 2022 I will be showing you illustrations I did for Flash Fiction February 2022 at Fictive Dream, an online magazine devoted to the short story.
Here’s the image editor Laura Black chose for this story, Daughter, by Gay Degani.
And here is the artwork with the banner. Take a look at this image. And then…
Read the story at Fictive Dream.
That dark window is just right. (K)
Thank you. I so often think windows can carry more than one message at once – open or closed? is the interior welcoming or not? An escape or an entry? I could go on and on.
Today’s flash Daughter by Gay Degani is a disturbing story in which the narrator has spent her life being emotionally trapped, at the very least. This illustration with its strong palette perfectly encapsulates the darkness, and the hope in this story. Thank you, Claudia.
Thank you. I often use squares or rectangles in my abstract work and to me, it can represent a barrier or an enclosure. Sometimes they are safe places and sometimes they are traps, I think. Applied to this story, I hope the bright colors mean the world outside this enclosure will be welcoming when the opportunity comes.
Claudia, looking at this again after reading the story, I see the one yellow window as that opportunity that will come after that sick … is dead. My heart goes out to the character in the story.
I like that idea. There is a light shining as a guide. I always like the thought of coming home at dark and the lights are on to welcome me.
