We Stand in the Store Window and We See You

Have you ever thought about the idea that the mannequins in store windows might be observing you and sizing you up?

This store window is on Lancaster Avenue in Bryn Mawr, PA, and the display and photo are from June 2021. In keeping with my ongoing project of drawing scenes from my everyday life, I did a pen sketch. Here it is. It’s in my small sketchbook and is about 5″ x 8″ or so.

I like the dress in the middle. Pick up that for me next time you are by that store. Don’t forget how short I am so Petite cut.

oops, pressed send too fast. I will certainly remember the Petite option for you. We know the line of a dress is important and must fit the proportions of the wearer! I sort of wish sometimes I could have a custom suit made for me. Nowhere to wear it, I would just like it.

Well, some mannequins used to be very scary when they had heads with faces!! Not sure why nowadays we are more accepting of these decapitated ones. Quite bizarre when you think about it!

Yes, I have thought so too. I think it is to make us focus on the clothes and how they look on a body, undistracted by a head, which makes me at least give the mannequin a whole other interpretations and focus (more toward looking at it as a person and away from the clothing)
