Night Route

…is the name of today’s story on Fictive Dream.

Throughout the month of February 2021 I will be showing you illustrations I did for Flash Fiction February 2021 at Fictive Dream, an online short-story magazine. For more information about FFF21 and my artwork process, look here.

Here’s the image editor Laura Black chose for this story, Night Route, by Thaddeus Rutkowski.

And here is the artwork with the banner. Take a look at this image. And then…

I love this artwork so much. Monochrome with yellow is one of my favourite combinations but I also love the dynamism of all of the lines and shapes and the energy of the spatter.

I also like yellow with these colors. Once again it’s the bright spot that makes the dark or colorless tones show who they are. Cast light is necessary for there to be shadow.

I really enjoyed this story. I often feel like the narrator. My mind is constantly talking to itself and I’m not sure of the relation of what it’s saying to what we think of as reality. I like your illustration, but I think the story needed something more colorful. His mind is like a circus. The illustration has a stillness about it that’s like haiku. (K)

I like the story too. I feel the opposite of you, I don’t feel a sense of frantic that would call for colors. I feel instead like this person’s mind is like the inside of an empty concrete parking garage. Endless spiraling going nowhere and in silence. I have no idea why this image came to me.

I can see that interpretation too. I guess I like to think the mind’s excursions have more life, but it may be I’m giving that inner voice too much credit. My meditation exercises keep telling me to let them go.

Being a person who is also living with thoughts that seem to have their own agenda, I understand your viewpoint here. Goes to show you, our inner worlds are the reality, the outer one is just the stage set?
