Houses Near My House in Pen and Ink

Remember my TV time sketchbook? Here are some “neighbors” whose portraits I did in April, 2020. They are all houses in my local Wyncote, PA, neighborhood that I photographed on a walk.

Here are the houses:

(Ooops, pressed send too soon) We have many older houses with lots of detail near me and there is always a new one I am considering for a portrait.

Thank you. These houses are very typical of our general area (Philadelphia, I mean) around the turn of the 1900 century. We lived in a similar house for quite a few years until we downsized. I loved the airy big rooms and windows. And I could draw these houses all day long.

MMmm, nice, Claudia! There are some fantastic old houses in Abington (near Abington Art Center) as I am sure YOU’VE noticed, too! Not to mention Alvethorpe Manor itself! and did you ever go to Cape May…I have some reference photos of some of THOSE beauties!!

Thank you. I’ve always liked this kind of house (having grown up in a 1960’s home very different from these) and was lucky to live in one for some time before we downsized here where we are now (a very comfortable in a different way 1950’s modern style split). But there is so much detail in these older houses and there are literally thousands of them in our area, so…I could do many many drawings!

Great drawings. I can totally understand why these houses appeal to you because of the mish-mash of shapes. There is something a bit fairytale about the shapes of these houses actually.

Yes, they are fanciful and come from a whole different place in the house builder’s imagination, and from a different worldview, too. We lived in a similar house in Wyncote for some time before coming to where we are now. There is a lot to be said for large windows and an expansive feeling of interior space.

Yes, all built around the turn of the 1900 century, and with big airy rooms, most of them. We lived near here in a similar house before we moved where we are to a smaller 1950’s house about a mile away. I still love walking around the neighborhood.
