Flash Fiction and Paint and Color and Ink and Paper – 2/10/19

Flash Fiction February 2019 – twenty-eight days of short short stories, an event taking place at Fictive Dream, an online fiction magazine featuring short stories. My part in the event? I did a small abstract painting as the illustration for each story. I’ll be showing one of them to you each day in February to accompany the story on Fictive Dream.

    This is a rich illustration and yet it suits the sense of decay in this story. I like the fact that the ‘dark shapes’ are present but don’t dominate. Incidentally, it’s very nice to see the artwork without the banner.

      Thank you. I loved the colors in the story – there was a lot to choose from – and the structure of the story was also idea-provoking in that I could see it laid out in sections in my mind, visually. I laugh a little when you mention liking the banner-free paintings because so often, more than I would like to admit, I did the painting and then thought -oh no, once again, I got caught up in painting and forgot I needed to compose the picture to accommodate the banner. I always fit it in, thank goodness, and then I would try to remind myself for the next painting, and then…you get the idea. So for these posts I thought I’d let the paintings show themselves as they were born as well as how they dressed up for work! it is a challenge to picture the image as it needs to look supporting the story, and that is another difference between just painting for yourself and making an image for a specific purpose.

      Yes, on the surface it seems – what is there to the process? I’ll just get right into it. And then…the more you dig into the text, the more complex ideas emerge and the illustration takes on more layers. This is challenging but exhilarating, too.

    There is a real sense of foreboding in the story and it gets darker and more oppressive as each layer is revealed. Your artwork, therefore, perfectly chimes with that sense of layers of revelation – the strips of colour – and the presence of the dark shapes suggesting the awful things gradually being revealed.

      Yes, I found this story to have a strong framework in how it moved, with demarcations in the text with different settings and times, and that helped me set up the illustrations. And it helped me, too, that there were colors associated with each stage. Black seemed natural as a contrast as well as having the connotations it does.
