I move to another category of tiles.
These next few groups are made from terra-cotta. They are tiles I rolled out myself, so they are irregular in size and shape, though all about 6″ x 6″. Each tile was fired, glazed, and then fired again. I’ve included a blank tile to show you what I started with.
- Terra-cotta tile, before anything done to it at all.
- Cow and tree, Lorimer Park, Abington, PA. Approx. 6″ x 6″
- Dead tree and bird, Green Ribbon Trail, Flourtown, PA. Approx. 6″ x 6″
You painted then fired? I like these. 👌
Thank you, yes, I used Velvet underglazes on the bisqued tile and then fired it, without glaze, but the image is affixed permanently.
That is definitely a magical tree that bird has found. (K)
I’ve made several artworks of this tree – it is in a park I exercise in – and for some reason it really has made an impression on me. I do think it’s magic.
There is something mythological about that second tile. I feel like there is a narrative behind it. That blue is wonderful.
Thank you. I used underglaze as well as underglaze chalk on that one to get the color. I like the myth idea. So many simple scenes can be extended into a larger symbolic context, I think.
